Council earmarks half a million for People’s Park major work

More than half a million pounds has been set aside to turn People’s Park into a ‘Destination Park’ as part of its 150th anniversary next year.

Elected members praised the ongoing developments for the major work at the recent monthly meeting.

In addition to the new senior play area underway there will be further investment in the park.

A number of enhancements are currently under consideration including replacement of street furniture and lighting, development of public toilet facility, creation of facilities for teens, refurbishment of the old bandstand from Broadway alongside new signage and branding.

The detail of the enhancements will be decided following public consultation.

The Council is determined to develop the park to meet the needs of the public.

Alderman Audrey Wales MBE, welcomed the update and thanked residents for their patience.

“I look forward to the work being carried out and I would like to congratulate everyone who was involved with the urban beach project.

“It has been a huge success this Summer and the feedback has been very positive.

“I would like to thank residents for their patience and I very much look forward to the enhancements to People’s Park.”

Councillor Eugene Reid, said: “I would reiterate all that Alderman Wales has said in relation to People’s Park.

“I am glad that progress is being made and I have no doubt it will be a fantastic destination park once it is completed.

“The urban beach has been a great success and the response from people has been excellent so I commend all those involved.”

Council will be seeking out opportunities for external funding in order to assist with the plans for the major work in People’s Park.
