Mayor spreads the magic of Christmas with annual show for Older People

The magic of Christmas is now well and truly in the air in Mid and East Antrim after older members of the community enjoyed music and comedy from top-name performers at the annual Mayor’s Show in the Braid Arts Centre in Ballymena.

The long-established festive tradition has been observed every year in the local area for almost three decades as the Mayor marks the contribution of older people to their communities with a special celebration.

The Mayor’s Show started life in the old Town Hall in Ballymena and has proven to be a big hit with all those who have attended and been involved in the organisation of the event down through the years.

With music and dancing and plenty of laughs for everyone, the special guests were also treated to delicious ice-cream during the interval and a box of chocolates to take home with them.

As with every year, the 2019 line-up of performers was a winning mix of the biggest names in country music and entertainment, with Country Harmony, Gerry Guthrie, Crawford Bell, Olivia Douglas and Ray Lynam all taking to the stage, while comedian Gary Wilson carried out the duties of compere in his own, inimitable style.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough, Cllr Maureen Morrow, said the show was the perfect start to the Christmas season.

“It was a great honour to celebrate the older members of our community at the annual Mayor’s Show and to give something back to those who make such an important contribution in our society.

“The standard of the entertainers again this year was phenomenal and certainly put everyone in the Christmas spirit!

“We have so much to be proud of in our borough, not least the people and the communities who live and work here, so it is a privilege to be able to celebrate them at this time of year.

“I would like to take this opportunity to wish a happy and peaceful Christmas season to everyone in Mid and East Antrim and urge you to enjoy the many events and activities planned over the next few weeks so that this Christmas time is a special one for all.”
