Q: “Dear Zara, I need your help! I’m starting my first year of Uni and I have NO IDEA what to wear for lectures let alone all the fresher’s parties I plan on attending! I’m on a bit of a budget, but still want to look stylish. Any suggestions?” – Ashley, 19, Student
A: First of all, let me congratulate you on getting accepted onto your course! This will be such an exciting time in your life and you will grow so much as an individual from the experience.
In terms of shopping, being a student definitely has its perks. If you register for a ‘TOTEM’ card (formerly the NUS Extra card) it will help tremendously in stretching that precious student loan. The cheapest option comes in at £12 which will give you a full year of discounts across beauty, travel, entertainment and eating out, but arguably the best thing about it is the discount on the large range of fashion brands it offers. Perfect for those watching the pennies.
* ASOS, BLACK CULLOTES – £25
* ASOS, RAINBOW TEE – £9.99
* ASOS, SLIP DRESS – £15
* ASOS, WHITE TRAINERS – £12
As someone who has been there and done it myself, I can safely say that early morning 9am lectures suck… hard. Therefore, I would suggest buying clothes that are easy to mix and match together, so that when you inevitably wake up later than you’d prefer in your dorm room, you know you can chuck something on quickly and be confident that you’ll still look good. I’d recommend getting a few pieces from the likes of New Look or ASOS as you get 10% student discount and they have a good selection of affordable basics. Black culottes always look chic paired with fresh white trainers and you can always jazz the outfit up with a bold top. A slip dress is also a great buy as it works double-duty. Layer it over a plain white t-shirt for a stylish 90’s inspired day look, or wear it solo for a night out.
* ACCESSORIZE, CANVAS BAG – £5
* BOOHOO, COLOUR BLOCK DRESS – £12
* MISSGUIDED, SEQUIN PLAYSUIT – £30
Being a student is a great time to experiment with your style, so visit Boohoo.com or Missguided.com for vibrant, fun going out clothes with again, 10% off for card holders. Rock a style you’ve never worn before, dye your hair with a crazy wash-out colour to match your outfit or wear head-to-toe sequins to the student bar just because you can. Oh, and if you haven’t already nabbed a free canvas bag at the fresher’s fare, be sure to pick one up. Throw your laptop, notebook and purse in it and you’re good to go. Good luck Ashley! – Zara, Fashion Editor
